Barcelona’s Lionel Messi rounded up his UAE trip with a picture on his Facebook page with Dubai’s ruler Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, thanking him for his hospitality.
Messi was in Dubai to attend the Globe Soccer Awards, which were held in conjunction with this year’s tenth Dubai International Sports Conference.
“It’s very nice to receive these awards, but I always say that the team makes it possible,” Messi was quoted by UAE newspaper The National as saying on Sunday. “It’s been an extraordinary year.”
FC Barcelona won a total of four awards: Best Club, Best President, Best Player of the Year and Best Media Attraction in Football. The Club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, was present at the event and spoke while receiving the prize for best club. “I thank the jury for this award that honors us … It is difficult to win everything that we won and I thank the effort of players and coaches and the support of our fans. We enjoy our style of football and our philosophy, and our goal is to make people happy. This year we will try to win again. With Messi and the other players life is easier. They keep playing better and better and hopefully that will continue well into the future,” he was quoted by the Club’s website as saying.
Belgium coach Marc Wilmots was named best manager while Benfica took the award for best club academy reported AFP.
Italy’s Andrea Pirlo and England’s Frank Lampard received achievement awards for their contribution to the game. Agent Jorge Mendes was honored as best agent and Saudi Arabia’s Yasser Al Shahrani was named the GCC player of the year, reported AFP.
