The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa Jayaraman passed away at 68 years old, on Monday at the Apollo Hospital after she went into cardiac arrest. Apollo Hospitals are making arrangements to take her mortal remains to her residence, Poes Gardens.
Jayalalithaa had been admitted at Apollo Hospital since September 22 as she suffered from dehydration and fever. Jayalalithaa was on extracorporeal life support. She suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday evening at the hospital. Three days of a mourning period have been announced by the government, schools are to be shut.
Jayalalithaa was popularly known as “Amma”, or “Mother” in the Tamil language, she was introduced to politics by her cinema screen partner, M.G. Ramachandran, another actor-turned politician, and went on to serve as chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times.
