Dubai’s public is set to enjoy the creations of over 60 artists from across the world and watch them transform the emirate’s Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) street into a 3D fun walk as part of the second annual Dubai Canvas Festival which, set to start on Tuesday, March 1.
Artists will exhibit their work in an area stretching over two kilometers, meant to encourage active public engagement and interaction.
The public will also have the opportunity to watch the street artists create pieces live at the festival. Various events on the festival’s sidelines will enable people to interact closely with the artists and gain an understanding of their techniques, including the use of materials and creative approach. Leading international artists will also conduct workshops aimed at imparting both advanced and basic street art skills to budding artists and all those interested.
According to the organizers, the festival reflects the character and diversity of Dubai and its growing status as a global cultural hub that provides a supportive environment for artists to display their artwork and engage with the public.
Among those participating include the inventor of 3D street art Kurt Wenner; New York-based artist and cyborg activist Neil Harbisson; Dutch pop-surrealist Leon Keer; Portuguese street-artist Odeith; London-based graffiti artist Fanakapan; Chinese street-artist Qi Xinghua; and Brazilian street-artist Eduardo Kobra.
Wenner, who returns to Dubai Canvas Festival this year, will be creating exclusive pieces for the festival. Wenner invented 3D pavement art in 1984, inspired by the use of the ‘anamorphic’ perspective of European classical masters.
Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is a strong supporter of creative ideas, that have transformed the city’s art scene. Initiatives such as Dubai Design District, the Boulevard galleries and Dubai Canvas Festival are just a few examples of the emirate’s commitment to developing art in Dubai.
The two-week fee-free festival will run from 1 March to 14 March 2016 from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm on weekdays and from 10.00 am to 11.00 pm on the weekend.
