How GST works

What Is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on every value addition. Goods and Services Tax is a single tax on the supply of goods and services, right from the manufacturer to the consumer.

How Is GST Calculated?

GST is calculated using a simple formula:

GST Amount = Original Cost × GST Rate ÷ 100

The total price, including GST can be calculated as:

Total Price=Original Cost+GST Amount

03 / See the math

How the math works

Example Calculation

Let’s say you have an original cost of $500 and the GST rate is 18%. The calculation would be:

GST Amount = 500 × 18 ÷ 100 = $90

Total Price=500+90=$590

GST Rates For Different Categories

GST rates vary for different categories of goods and services. In India, the main GST rates since 22 September 2025 are 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for selected luxury and “sin” goods; these replaced the earlier 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% slabs (GST Council, 56th meeting). Other countries use their own GST rates.

Understanding GST For Your Business

GST For Manufacturers

Manufacturers are liable to pay GST on the raw materials they purchase and the finished goods they sell. The input tax credit system allows them to claim credit for the GST paid on raw materials against the GST collected on finished goods.

GST For Retailers

Retailers collect GST on the sale of goods to consumers. They can claim the input tax credit for the GST paid on goods purchased from manufacturers or wholesalers.

GST For Service Providers

Service providers charge GST on the services they offer. They can claim the input tax credit for the GST paid on inputs used to provide their services.
